Hydrogendoping is a material modification technique in which hydrogen atoms are intentionally introduced into a host lattice to alter its electronic, optical, or structural properties. The process exploits the small size and high mobility of hydrogen to interact with defects, bonds, and electronic states within the material. In crystalline silicon, for example, hydrogen can passivate dangling bonds at grain boundaries, improving charge carrier lifetime and reducing recombination losses, which is critical for high-efficiency solar cells. In two‑dimensional transition‑metal dichalcogenides such as MoS₂, hydrogenation can induce a transition from indirect to direct bandgap, enhancing photoluminescence for optoelectronic applications. Perovskite light‑absorbers also benefit from hydrogen incorporation, which can stabilize the structure against moisture and suppress ion migration, thereby extending device lifetime.

Typical hydrogenation methods include plasma immersion ion implantation, annealing in hydrogen atmospheres, and chemical vapor deposition with hydrogen-containing precursors. The chosen method depends on the desired depth profile and the intrinsic reactivity of the host material. While hydrogendoping offers advantages such as tunable carrier concentration, defect passivation, and bandgap engineering, it also poses challenges. Hydrogen can diffuse rapidly under thermal stress, potentially leading to unwanted phase segregation or premature degradation. Careful control over temperature, hydrogen flux, and post‑treatment annealing is therefore essential.

Research continues to explore hydrogendoping in emerging fields such as memristive devices, hydrogen fuel cells, and flexible electronics, where precise control over material properties can unlock new performance regimes.
