Hydrofluorihiilivedyillä, often abbreviated as HFCs, are a class of organic compounds that contain only carbon, hydrogen, and fluorine atoms. They are synthesized substances and do not occur naturally. HFCs are primarily used as refrigerants, propellants in aerosol sprays, and foaming agents in the production of insulation. They were developed as replacements for ozone-depleting substances like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs).

One of the main advantages of HFCs is their low toxicity and non-flammability, which made them attractive alternatives for many applications. However, while HFCs do not deplete the ozone layer, they are potent greenhouse gases. This means that when released into the atmosphere, they trap heat and contribute to global warming. The global warming potential (GWP) of different HFCs varies significantly, with some having GWPs thousands of times higher than carbon dioxide.

Due to their significant contribution to climate change, there is a global effort to phase down the production and consumption of HFCs. International agreements, such as the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, aim to reduce HFC emissions gradually. This phase-down is driving the development and adoption of alternative refrigerants and technologies with lower environmental impacts, including hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) and natural refrigerants like ammonia and carbon dioxide.
