A hydrocollator is a piece of therapeutic equipment used in physical therapy and athletic training settings. It is essentially a heated water unit designed to hold and warm moist heat packs, also known as hydrocollator packs. These packs are typically made of a silica gel or similar material encased in a durable cloth.

The hydrocollator unit heats the packs to a therapeutic temperature, usually between 160-175 degrees Fahrenheit (71-79 degrees Celsius). Once heated, the packs are removed from the water, usually wrapped in a towel or other protective material to prevent direct contact with the skin, and then applied to the affected area of the body.

The primary purpose of applying moist heat from a hydrocollator pack is to increase local blood flow, relax muscles, reduce pain and stiffness, and improve tissue flexibility. This therapy is often used to treat chronic pain conditions, muscle spasms, arthritis, and to prepare tissues for stretching or other manual therapy techniques. The moist heat is thought to be more penetrating and effective than dry heat. The hydrocollator unit itself is a thermostatically controlled container, often made of stainless steel, with a water reservoir and a rack or basket to hold the heat packs. Maintenance typically involves regular cleaning and water changes to ensure hygiene and prevent mineral buildup.
