A hullámfrontszképítés, or wavefront shaping, is a technique used to control and manipulate light waves to achieve specific outcomes. This is particularly useful when light needs to pass through or interact with a scattering medium, such as biological tissue or a complex optical material. In such media, light tends to scatter randomly, distorting its path and making it difficult to focus or image effectively.

Wavefront shaping overcomes this scattering by pre-compensating for the distortions. This is typically done using a spatial light modulator (SLM), which is a device capable of altering the phase or amplitude of individual points across a light beam. By measuring how the light is distorted by the scattering medium, an algorithm can determine the necessary adjustments to be applied by the SLM. This creates a "shaped" wavefront that, when it passes through the medium, emerges in a desired state, such as a focused spot.

The process often involves an iterative feedback loop. Light is sent through the medium, its output is measured (for example, its intensity at a target point), and this measurement is used to adjust the SLM's pattern. This cycle is repeated until the desired effect, like maximum intensity at the target, is achieved. Wavefront shaping has applications in microscopy, where it can enable deeper imaging into scattering tissues, and in optical communication, where it can improve signal fidelity through noisy channels.
