Precompensating, or precompensation, is the practice of applying a compensating transformation to a signal, input, or control action before it encounters a system, with the goal of achieving a desired output by offsetting known distortions, delays, or nonlinearities in the subsequent dynamics. It is used across fields to improve accuracy, speed, or fidelity of responses.

In control theory and signal processing, a precompensator or feedforward compensator is designed to modify the reference input or add an anticipatory path so that the overall closed-loop system meets a specified transfer function. This often involves modeling the plant’s dynamics and disturbances and creating an inverse or approximate inverse of those effects. The approach can reduce steady-state error, improve transient behavior, or counteract known delays.

In communications and signal integrity, precompensation includes techniques such as pre-emphasis and predistortion. Pre-emphasis boosts high-frequency components before transmission to compensate for their attenuation in cables or channels, while predistortion shapes the signal to counteract nonlinearities in power amplifiers or transmitters, aiming for a more linear end-to-end response.

In optics and photonics, dispersion precompensation introduces opposite dispersion to a signal before it travels through a dispersive medium, such as optical fiber, to minimize pulse broadening at the receiver.
