hulevesien
Hulevesien is the Finnish term for stormwater, the surface runoff produced by precipitation on built and other impervious surfaces. In urban areas, hulevesien is collected through dedicated storm drainage networks and is often directed to retention or detention basins, infiltration trenches, or biofiltration facilities before being discharged to streams, lakes, or the sea. In older cities with combined sewer systems, heavy rainfall can cause overflows that release stormwater mixed with wastewater, creating flood and water quality risks.
The composition of hulevesien depends on land use and season. It may carry pollutants such as oils
Management approaches combine structural and non-structural measures. Structural solutions include detention or retention basins, infiltration trenches,
Treatment options for hulevesien prior to discharge range from sediments and oil–water separators to biofiltration systems
