Hudinfektion, or skin infection, refers to an infection of the skin and underlying tissues caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites. It ranges from minor, superficial infections to deeper conditions such as cellulitis or abscesses. The exact cause influences treatment and prognosis.

Common bacterial infections include impetigo, folliculitis, cellulitis, and erysipelas. Impetigo often presents with honey-colored crusts, while cellulitis causes spreading redness, warmth, and pain. Fungal infections such as dermatophytoses (tungal) and candidiasis affect the skin surface, sometimes causing itching and scaling. Viral infections include herpes simplex and varicella-zoster, which may cause blisters or a painful rash. Treatment depends on the cause and severity. Superficial bacterial infections may respond to topical antiseptics or antibiotics, while deeper infections often require oral or intravenous antibiotics. Fungal infections use topical or systemic antifungals. Viral infections may require antiviral medications or supportive care. In cases of abscess or significant swelling, drainage may be necessary. Wound care and hygiene are important to prevent spread and recurrence.

Prevention includes good skin hygiene, prompt treatment of wounds, regular hand hygiene, and management of conditions that impair immunity or circulation. Seek medical attention for rapidly spreading redness, fever, severe pain, or if symptoms worsen despite initial treatment.
