Hudflagor refers to the shedding of dead skin cells from the surface of the body. This is a natural and continuous process as the skin renews itself. New skin cells are produced in the lower layers of the epidermis and gradually migrate to the surface, eventually dying and flaking off. This shedding is typically so gradual that it goes unnoticed.

The rate at which skin cells shed can be influenced by various factors. Age plays a role, with younger individuals generally shedding skin more rapidly than older individuals. Environmental conditions, such as humidity and temperature, can also affect the process. Dry air, for example, can sometimes lead to more visible flaking.

Certain skin conditions and treatments can also increase the rate of skin shedding. Conditions like psoriasis or eczema involve abnormal shedding of skin cells, leading to noticeable scales or flakes. Sunburns cause the outermost layers of damaged skin to peel away. Furthermore, some skincare products, particularly those containing retinoids or alpha hydroxy acids, are designed to accelerate exfoliation, intentionally increasing the rate of skin cell shedding to improve skin texture and appearance. While some flaking is normal, excessive or persistent flaking can sometimes indicate an underlying issue and may warrant consultation with a healthcare professional.
