Hormoonkierukka, also known as a hormonal IUD or hormonal intrauterine device, is a type of reversible contraception. It is a small, T-shaped device that is inserted into the uterus by a healthcare provider. The primary function of the hormoonkierukka is to release a progestin hormone, levonorgestrel, directly into the uterus. This hormone thickens the cervical mucus, making it more difficult for sperm to reach the egg, and also thins the lining of the uterus, which can prevent implantation if fertilization does occur.
