The chart is cast for the question’s location and treated as a temporary map of the sky, used to determine whether a particular outcome is likely, and sometimes when it may occur. Answers are typically presented as yes, no, or with certain qualifiers such as delay or ambiguity.

The practice relies on traditional chart interpretation. The ascendant and the ruler of the first house represent the querent, while the ruler of the seventh house represents the matter or its counterpart. Other houses provide contextual pointers, such as the second house for wealth, the third for communication, the fourth for home, the fifth for children or risk, the eighth for endings or shared resources, and the twelfth for secrecy or loss.
