A holesaw, or hole saw, is a cylindrical cutting tool used to create circular holes in a range of materials, including wood, plastic, metal, and ceramic tile. It consists of a hollow cylindrical saw with teeth around its rim, mounted on an arbor that is driven by a drill. A pilot drill or center bit sits in the middle to guide the saw and prevent wandering during cutting. The assembly is attached to the drill via the arbor, and the saw’s depth is limited by its length.

Common configurations include bi-metal hole saws, which have a steel body with hardened teeth and are suitable for wood and metal; carbide-tipped versions designed for tile and other hard materials; and specialty sets that include multiple diameters. Step hole saws provide a series of progressively larger holes in one tool, while some larger units use replaceable teeth. Diameters range from small, around 14–20 millimeters, to several inches in commercial sets.

Operation requires proper setup and technique. A pilot bit should align with the center of the hole to stabilize the cut. Use appropriate drill speed: higher speeds for wood, lower speeds and cooling lubricant or cutting oil for metal. Start with light pressure and maintain a straight, perpendicular approach to prevent binding and tooth wear. Clear debris regularly and avoid overheating the teeth.

Applications include electrical outlets, plumbing, cabinetry, and general fabrication. Safety considerations include wearing eye protection, securing the workpiece, and using a backing board to support tear-out. Regular maintenance includes cleaning, inspecting teeth for wear, and replacing worn or damaged saws.
