It is characterized by the enlargement and weakening of the left ventricle, the heart's main pumping chamber. This dilation leads to a reduced ability of the heart to pump blood effectively throughout the body.

The exact causes of hjärtklyftsjukdom are not always clear, but it can be hereditary, meaning it can be passed down through families. Other contributing factors can include viral infections, certain toxins, alcohol abuse, and other underlying medical conditions like high blood pressure or autoimmune disorders. In some cases, the cause remains unknown, referred to as idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy.
