Hitsaamokasvolla, known in English as a welding helmet, is a specialized piece of personal protective equipment (PPE) designed to protect the welder's face, eyes, and neck from the intense ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) radiation produced during welding processes. It also shields the welder from sparks, spatter, and hot slag. The primary function of the welding helmet is to prevent arc eye, a painful condition caused by overexposure to UV radiation, and to avoid burns and other injuries.

Modern welding helmets typically feature a dark, filtered lens that automatically darkens when exposed to the arc. This feature is known as an auto-darkening lens or ADF. ADF technology uses sensors that detect the sudden bright light of the welding arc and trigger an electrochemical reaction within the lens, causing it to become opaque almost instantaneously. This allows welders to position their workpiece without the need to manually lower a traditional, fixed-shade welding shield. Older or simpler welding helmets use a fixed shade lens, requiring the welder to have a separate method of shielding their face before striking the arc.

The shade number of the lens indicates the level of protection. Higher shade numbers offer darker protection, suitable for more intense welding processes like TIG or high-amperage welding. The helmet shell is usually made of durable, heat-resistant plastic or fiberglass. Proper fit and comfort are important for prolonged use, and many helmets offer adjustable headgear. In addition to protecting the eyes and face, some welding helmets incorporate respiratory protection systems, especially when welding in areas with poor ventilation or when working with materials that produce hazardous fumes.
