Hitsattavuuteen (weldability) is the property of a material that determines how readily it can be welded under specified conditions to form a joint with acceptable properties. It reflects how the material responds to heat input, its microstructure, and its susceptibility to defects such as cracking, porosity, or excessive distortion.

Several factors influence weldability. Chemical composition—especially carbon content and alloying elements like chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and copper—along with impurities such as sulfur and phosphorus and hydrogen content, affects crack susceptibility. Thickness, joint design, and heat input, together with preheating, interpass temperature control, and post-weld heat treatment, determine cooling rates and phase transformations that govern joint quality. The chosen welding process (MIG/MAG, TIG, SMAW, FCAW, friction welding) and the filler material also play crucial roles.

Material-specific considerations include: high-carbon and alloyed steels can form brittle structures or hot cracking in the heat-affected zone; some high-strength alloys require controlled heat input and preheating to avoid cracking; austenitic stainless steels may suffer sensitization if cooled slowly; aluminum and magnesium alloys often face oxide-related challenges and porosity unless oxide removal and low hydrogen processes are used.

Assessment and improvement of weldability involve predictive calculations, material testing, and adherence to welding procedure specifications. Common tests include bend tests, tensile tests of welded joints, hardness and toughness assessments, and non-destructive inspections such as radiography or ultrasonic testing. Practical improvements include selecting compatible filler materials, optimizing heat input, applying preheating where needed, controlling interpass temperatures, and performing appropriate post-weld heat treatment.

In industry, weldability informs material selection, welding process choice, and quality control. Standards from ISO, EN, and other bodies provide criteria for evaluating weldability for specific materials and applications.
