A histogramn is a graphical representation of the distribution of numerical data. It is an estimate of the probability distribution of a continuous variable. To construct a histogramn, the first step is to "bin" the range of values—that is, divide the entire range of values into a series of intervals—and then count how many values fall into each interval. The bins are usually specified as consecutive, non-overlapping intervals of a variable. The bins (intervals) must be adjacent and are often of equal size. If the bins are of equal size, a rectangle is erected over the bin with height proportional to the frequency—the number of cases in each bin. A histogramn is a type of bar graph.

The histogramn provides a visual impression of the data's distribution. It can reveal the central tendency, spread, and shape of the distribution. Common shapes include symmetric, skewed (left or right), and unimodal or multimodal. The number of bins used can affect the appearance of the histogramn; too few bins may obscure important features of the distribution, while too many bins may make the histogramn appear noisy and difficult to interpret. There are various methods for choosing the optimal number of bins, such as Sturges' formula or Freedman-Diaconis rule.
