Hirsutism is a condition characterized by the excessive growth of dark, coarse hair in women in a male-like pattern. This typically includes hair growth on the upper lip, chin, chest, abdomen, and back. It is a symptom, not a disease itself, and is often caused by an underlying hormonal imbalance, specifically an excess of androgens, which are male sex hormones.

Common causes of hirsutism include polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which is a very common endocrine disorder. Other potential causes can include certain adrenal gland disorders such as congenital adrenal hyperplasia or Cushing's syndrome, as well as tumors of the ovaries or adrenal glands. In some cases, hirsutism can be idiopathic, meaning there is no identifiable underlying cause. Certain medications can also induce hirsutism.

Diagnosis involves a medical history, physical examination, and often blood tests to measure hormone levels. Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying cause and managing the symptoms. This can include medications to reduce androgen production or block their effects, such as oral contraceptives or anti-androgen drugs. Hair removal methods like shaving, waxing, electrolysis, or laser hair removal can also be used for cosmetic management.
