Hiontatekniikalla, a Finnish term, translates to "grinding technique" or "lapping technique" in English. It refers to a mechanical finishing process used to achieve extremely smooth and precise surfaces on various materials, particularly metals and hard materials like ceramics and carbides. This technique involves the use of abrasive particles, often in the form of a slurry or paste, which are rubbed against the workpiece surface by a rotating or oscillating tool.

The abrasive particles, typically diamond, silicon carbide, or aluminum oxide, are suspended in a liquid or paste medium. The workpiece is moved against a rotating lap, which is a flat or contoured surface made of a suitable material such as cast iron, copper, or felt. The relative motion between the lap and the workpiece, combined with the abrasive particles, removes microscopic high points from the surface, resulting in a highly accurate and polished finish.

Hiontatekniikalla is employed when very tight tolerances and exceptional surface finish are required.
