The term arises in Finnish manufacturing and workshop language, and the plural partitive form hiomapäitä is used when speaking of multiple heads in an indefinite quantity. These heads are designed to be mounted on common tool spindles and exchanged as needed during finishing operations.

Heads are typically mounted on rotating spindles and come in various shapes and abrasive materials. Common forms include cylindrical or conical grinding heads, wheel-shaped segments, and ball or bullet shapes for contour finishing. The abrasive layer can be diamond, cubic boron nitride, silicon carbide, aluminum oxide, or ceramic, depending on material and finish required.
