Hill tribe is a term used to refer to various ethnic minority communities that inhabit upland or highland areas in parts of Southeast Asia and southern China. The label encompasses dozens of distinct groups—such as the Hmong (Miao), Akha, Lisu, Lahu, Karen, Yao, and Hani—each with its own language, customs, and social organization. These communities are traditionally associated with hill country farming, including shifting (slash-and-burn) agriculture, terrace farming, and forest-based livelihoods. Settlement patterns are often in remote valleys or mountain fringes within national borders that include northern Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, and Yunnan province in China.

The term arose in colonial and postcolonial contexts and has been criticized for homogenizing diverse peoples, oversimplifying identities, and overlooking variations in status and rights. In many countries, hill-tribe communities have faced land dispossession, taxation, and state assimilation policies, which have affected language maintenance, education, and cultural practice. Citizenship and legal status vary; some groups are recognized minorities, while others experience statelessness or restricted access to public services.

Cultural life is rich and diverse, with variations in dress, music, religious belief, and social structure. Animist and Buddhist traditions are common, with Christian communities among some groups due to missionary activity. In recent decades, tourism, handicrafts, and cash cropping have become important income sources, raising debates about exploitation, cultural commodification, and sustainable development. Contemporary policy challenges include land rights, language education, and preserving cultural heritage while promoting economic opportunity.
