In cell biology and clinical contexts, viability indicates the fraction of living cells in a population. High viability implies that most cells retain membrane integrity and metabolic activity after processing. In seed science, seed viability refers to a seed lot’s ability to germinate. High seed viability correlates with high germination rates under optimal conditions, though seed vigor—how quickly and uniformly seeds germinate—also matters for practical outcomes.

In manufacturing and medicine, viability testing is a release criterion for cell therapies and other biologics, and for probiotic products to ensure potency. The term is also used more broadly to describe the persistence of organisms in environmental or clinical samples, or the functional integrity of cultured tissues.
