Hydrogen is a clean and versatile energy carrier, meaning it can be used to store and deliver energy, and its combustion produces only water vapor.

Hydrogen production methods vary significantly in their environmental impact and cost. Grey hydrogen is produced from natural gas through steam methane reforming, a process that releases carbon dioxide. Blue hydrogen is also produced from natural gas, but the carbon dioxide emissions are captured and stored, making it a lower-carbon option. Green hydrogen, considered the most sustainable, is produced through electrolysis of water, powered by renewable energy sources such as solar or wind power. This method generates no greenhouse gas emissions during production. Other methods, like biomass gasification, also exist.

Storage of hydrogen is a key challenge due to its low volumetric energy density. Common methods include high-pressure tanks, cryogenic liquefaction (storing it as a liquid at very low temperatures), and metal hydrides, which absorb hydrogen into their structure. Transportation of hydrogen can be done via pipelines, trucks carrying compressed gas or liquid hydrogen, or by converting hydrogen into ammonia or other carrier molecules.

Hydrogen can be utilized in a variety of applications. Fuel cells convert hydrogen and oxygen into electricity, heat, and water with high efficiency, making them suitable for vehicles, portable electronics, and stationary power generation. Hydrogen can also be combusted directly in engines or turbines, or used as a feedstock in industrial processes like ammonia production and oil refining.
