Heteropterans are a suborder of insects belonging to the order Hemiptera, commonly known as true bugs. This diverse group comprises over 40,000 described species worldwide and is characterized by their distinctive mouthparts, which form a piercing-sucking beak or rostrum. This rostrum is used for feeding on a wide variety of plant juices, other insects, or even blood in some cases. Another defining feature of heteropterans is their forewings, which are typically hardened into a leathery or chitinous structure called a hemelytra. The basal portion of the hemelytra is usually thickened, while the apical portion is membranous, allowing for flight.

Heteropterans exhibit a wide range of life cycles and ecological roles. Many are phytophagous, feeding on plants and sometimes becoming agricultural pests. Others are predatory, consuming smaller insects and invertebrates, thus playing a role in natural pest control. The feeding habits and host plant specificities of heteropterans contribute to their ecological significance within various terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Their life cycle involves incomplete metamorphosis, with young instars, known as nymphs, resembling smaller versions of the adults and gradually developing through a series of molts. This suborder includes familiar insects such as stink bugs, shield bugs, water striders, and assassin bugs.
