At its core, herméneutique seeks to understand the meaning of texts, considering their historical context, authorial intent, and the reader's own perspective.

The term itself derives from the Greek god Hermes, the messenger of the gods, who was known for his ability to bridge the gap between the divine and the human, often through interpretation and communication. Early forms of herméneutique were primarily concerned with religious texts, aiming to uncover the divine message and its implications for human life. This often involved allegorical and symbolic readings to decipher deeper meanings beyond the literal word.

In modern philosophy, herméneutique has expanded its scope to encompass the interpretation of all forms of human expression, including art, law, and everyday communication. Thinkers like Friedrich Schleiermacher and Hans-Georg Gadamer have made significant contributions, emphasizing the dialogical nature of interpretation and the role of tradition and historical consciousness. Gadamer, in particular, highlighted the concept of the "hermeneutic circle," where understanding a part of a text requires understanding the whole, and vice versa. The reader's own pre-understandings and historical situation are seen as integral to the interpretive process, leading to an understanding that is always situated and evolving.
