Hergalvanising is a term sometimes used colloquially to refer to the process of applying a zinc coating to iron or steel to prevent rust. This process is more formally known as galvanisation or galvanizing. It involves immersing the base metal in a molten zinc bath. The molten zinc metallurgically bonds with the iron or steel, forming a protective layer. This layer acts as a barrier, preventing corrosive elements from reaching the underlying metal.

The zinc coating provides protection in two primary ways. Firstly, it acts as a physical barrier, shielding the iron or steel from contact with oxygen and moisture, which are essential for rust formation. Secondly, zinc is more reactive than iron or steel. This means that even if the zinc coating is scratched or damaged, exposing the base metal, the zinc will preferentially corrode (or "sacrifice" itself) in a process called galvanic corrosion. This sacrificial action protects the underlying iron or steel from rusting.

The effectiveness and durability of the galvanised coating depend on factors such as the thickness of the zinc layer and the environmental conditions to which the coated material is exposed. Common applications for galvanised steel include construction materials, automotive parts, and outdoor furniture, where resistance to corrosion is crucial for longevity and safety. The term "hergalvanising" does not represent a distinct or separate industrial process from standard galvanisation.
