In the past tense it takes das Partizip Perfekt herangeflogen.

Heranfliegen is commonly used in ornithology, ethology, and nature descriptions. It can also appear in fishing contexts, particularly in traditional fly fishing terminology. Anglers who use artificial flies to lure fish may refer to the technique as “heranfliegen”, meaning to release or cast the fly in such a way that it allows the fish to approach the fly by swimming in the water. While the fish itself does not literally fly, the term is metaphorical, linking the physical movement of the fly with the fish’s approach.

Synonyms include zukonfliegen, sich verfliegen und die dichterische Wendung „in die Luft steigen“. The verb can be figuratively used to indicate any gradual approach or convergence, such as in “die Zeit heranfliegt” when time seems to pass quickly.
