A hemodialyzer, often referred to as an artificial kidney, is a medical device used in hemodialysis treatment. Hemodialysis is a life-sustaining procedure for individuals with kidney failure, where the kidneys are no longer able to adequately filter waste products and excess fluid from the blood. The hemodialyzer performs this crucial function outside the body.

The device consists of a semipermeable membrane, typically made of synthetic material, that separates the patient's blood from a special dialysis fluid called dialysate. Blood flows from the patient's body through one side of the membrane, while the dialysate flows on the other side. The semipermeable membrane allows waste products such as urea and creatinine, as well as excess electrolytes and water, to pass from the blood into the dialysate, effectively cleaning the blood. Essential substances like red blood cells and proteins are too large to cross the membrane and remain in the bloodstream.

The cleansed blood is then returned to the patient's body. Hemodialyzers are designed for single-use to prevent infection and the transmission of diseases. The efficiency of a hemodialyzer is determined by factors such as the surface area of the membrane and the type of membrane material used. Various types and sizes of hemodialyzers are available to suit different patient needs and dialysis protocols.
