The name combines haem- from the Greek haima "blood" and alarm, signaling its purpose to warn caregivers about physiologic instability detected in blood-related parameters.

Conceptually, a hemlarm integrates data from multiple sensors—noninvasive optical sensors for hemoglobin, wearable devices measuring hematocrit proxies, and laboratory-like electrochemical assays for electrolytes, lactate, potassium, and markers of hemolysis. It uses a rules-based or machine-learning algorithm to identify patterns indicating risk, and, when thresholds are exceeded, issues alerts.

Potential benefits include earlier detection of deterioration, reduced clinician workload through prioritized alerts, and integration with automated response systems.
