Helminths are parasitic worms that live in the bodies of their hosts. They are a diverse group of multicellular animals that can infect humans, animals, and even plants. Helminths are broadly categorized into three main groups: nematodes (roundworms), cestodes (tapeworms), and trematodes (flukes).

Nematodes are unsegmented, cylindrical worms with a complete digestive system. Examples include Ascaris lumbricoides (roundworm) and Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm). Cestodes are segmented, ribbon-like worms that lack a digestive system and absorb nutrients directly through their body surface. The most well-known example is Taenia solium (pork tapeworm). Trematodes are flattened, leaf-shaped worms, often with oral and ventral suckers for attachment. Schistosoma species (blood flukes) are a significant example.

Infections by helminths, known as helminthiasis, can occur through various routes, including ingestion of contaminated food or water, skin penetration, or vector-borne transmission. Symptoms vary widely depending on the type of helminth, the site of infection, and the host's immune response. They can range from asymptomatic to severe conditions like malnutrition, anemia, organ damage, and neurological problems.

Diagnosis often involves microscopic examination of stool samples for eggs or larvae, or sometimes blood tests. Treatment typically involves anthelmintic medications that kill the worms. Prevention strategies focus on improved sanitation, safe food and water practices, and public health education.
