A helixväxel, also known as a helical gear, is a type of gear that is used to transmit power and motion between parallel shafts. Unlike spur gears, which have teeth cut parallel to the axis of rotation, helical gears have teeth that are cut at an angle to the axis. This angle, called the helix angle, causes the teeth to mesh gradually, leading to smoother and quieter operation.

The gradual engagement of helical gear teeth results in a reduced amount of shock and vibration compared to spur gears. This makes them ideal for applications where noise reduction and smooth power transmission are important, such as in automotive transmissions, industrial machinery, and power tools. The angled teeth also allow for a greater contact area between meshing gears, which can handle higher loads than spur gears of the same size.

However, the helix angle also introduces a thrust load, a force that acts along the axis of the shaft. This thrust load must be accommodated by bearings in the system. Helical gears can be manufactured in two forms: right-hand helix and left-hand helix. When two helical gears are used together, they must have opposite helix directions to transmit motion effectively. The pitch diameter, module, and pressure angle are key parameters in helical gear design, similar to spur gears.
