Helbe is a small, East African genus of elephantfish, found in isolated lakes and rivers of eastern and southern Africa. The Helbe genus is part of the family Mormyridae, a family of fish characterized by their ability to produce bioelectrical signals.

There are two species of Helbe fish, known for their large size and distinctive jaws. They are nocturnal feeders, using their long, thin bodies to hunt in the depths of their aquatic habitats. The Helbe's navigation and hunting abilities are facilitated by the multitude of electroreceptors found along their bodies, called ampullae of Lorenzini.

Reproduction in Helbe fish involves the release of eggs and milt into the water, often in large quantities. Fertilization occurs externally. The eggs of Helbe fish, and most other mormyrids, possess adhesive properties, allowing them to attach to objects in the water column and thereby minimizing the risk of becoming dislodged.

Habitat of Helbe fish is generally characterized by shallow waters and sparse vegetation, allowing them to efficiently navigate and hunt using electrolocation. The fish have been observed to live in communities of varying sizes, with specific social structures not fully investigated.

Lack of comprehensive information severely limits knowledge of Helbe fish behavior. They live in moderate to high temperatures, which can range between 13 degrees and 28 degrees Celsius. Both dietary habits and population dynamics remain relatively unexplored.
