Havsgrund is the Swedish term for the seabed, the bottom surface of the world’s seas and oceans. In English, it is commonly referred to as the seabed or sea floor. The havsgrund encompasses the underwater topography from coastal shelves to the deepest ocean trenches and includes features such as continental shelves, continental slopes, rises, abyssal plains, submarine canyons, seamounts, and hydrothermal vents.

Geologically, the havsgrund is organized into distinct zones. The continental shelf lies near shore and gradually slopes down to the shelf break, after which the continental slope descends more steeply to the continental rise. Beyond rises lie the abyssal plains at great depths, with trenches marking subduction zones. The surface is shaped by tectonics, sediment transport, currents, and past sea-level changes, leading to a complex mosaic of rocks, sediments, and relief.

The composition of the havsgrund varies with depth. Most of the shallow seabed consists of loose sediments such as sand, silt, and clay derived from land and coastal processes. Deeper regions accumulate biogenic ooze from microscopic organisms, while rocky beds, reefs, and hydrothermal systems create diverse habitats. Sedimentation and erosion are ongoing processes, driven by currents, storms, and tectonic activity, influencing the stability of slopes and the formation of features like canyons and landslides.

Ecologically, the havsgrund hosts a wide range of benthic life, from microbes and invertebrates to larger organisms like crustaceans, mollusks, and fish. Special communities occur around vents and cold seeps, and the seabed plays a key role in global biogeochemical cycles, including carbon burial.

Human relevance includes navigation safety, resource exploration (sand, gravel, minerals, and hydrocarbons), and scientific research. Mapping and sampling of the havsgrund are conducted with sonar, sub-bottom profilers, cores, ROVs, and AUVs to improve understanding of geology, ecology, and climate history.
