Hatechronosis is a term coined by psychologist and author Robert Jay Lifton to describe a psychological phenomenon where individuals experience a sense of loss or disconnection from their own past due to traumatic events. This disassociation can manifest in various ways, including a distorted sense of time, memory loss, or a feeling of being stuck in the present.

Lifton introduced the concept in his 1979 book "The Nazi Doctors: Medical Killing and the Psychology of Genocide." He observed that survivors of the Holocaust often struggled with a sense of temporal displacement, feeling as though they had been transported to a different era and were unable to return to their original timeline. This disorientation was not merely a result of physical displacement but was deeply rooted in the psychological trauma experienced during the Holocaust.

The term "hatechronosis" is derived from the Greek words "hate" (time) and "chronos" (past), reflecting the idea of a temporal displacement from one's past. This condition can lead to a variety of psychological symptoms, including chronic anxiety, depression, and difficulty forming meaningful relationships. It is important to note that hatechronosis is not a recognized medical diagnosis but rather a descriptive term used to understand the psychological impact of severe trauma.

Research on hatechronosis has been limited, but it has been studied in the context of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other trauma-related conditions. Psychotherapy, particularly trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), has shown promise in helping individuals address and overcome the effects of hatechronosis.
