Hasiči are emergency responders responsible for firefighting and rescue operations. In the Czech Republic they are organized within Hasičský záchranný sbor České republiky (HZS ČR), the national Fire Rescue Service. The HZS ČR operates under the Ministry of Interior and comprises professional fire brigades stationed at regional authorities, as well as volunteer fire brigades known as dobrovolní hasiči. In many communities, volunteer units cooperate with professional teams to provide round-the-clock readiness. Specialized units address hazards such as hazardous materials, water rescue, or high-angle rescue.

Typical duties include extinguishing fires, performing technical rescues such as extrication from vehicles, rescuing people from floods or collapsed structures, and responding to natural disasters. They also provide fire prevention, safety inspections, and public education. When dispatched, they coordinate with the police, emergency medical services, and other authorities to manage incidents safely and efficiently.

Training and equipment: recruitment and training occur at regional training centers and academies; personnel receive instruction in firefighting, rescue techniques, hazardous materials handling, and medical first response. Equipment varies but commonly includes fire engines, ladders, water rescue apparatus, protective clothing, self-contained breathing apparatus, hydraulic cutting and spreading tools, and communication systems. The tradition of volunteer firefighting has deep roots in Central Europe, and in the Czech Republic it remains a prominent component of national civil protection and emergency response.
