Heart failure, often referred to as congestive heart failure (CHF), is a chronic medical condition in which the heart muscle does not pump blood as well as it should. This means that the body's cells may not get enough oxygen and nutrients, and waste products can build up. It is not a sudden event but a progressive condition that can develop over time.

Heart failure can affect the left side, right side, or both sides of the heart. When the left side is affected, blood may back up into the lungs, causing shortness of breath. When the right side is affected, blood may back up into the abdomen, legs, and feet, leading to swelling.

Common causes of heart failure include coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart valve problems. Lifestyle factors such as obesity, lack of physical activity, and smoking can also contribute.

Symptoms can vary but often include shortness of breath, fatigue, swelling in the legs and abdomen, rapid or irregular heartbeat, and a persistent cough or wheezing. In some cases, individuals may experience no symptoms.

Diagnosis typically involves a review of medical history and symptoms, a physical examination, and diagnostic tests such as electrocardiograms (ECG), echocardiograms, and blood tests. Treatment aims to manage the condition, improve symptoms, and enhance quality of life. This may include medications, lifestyle changes, and in some cases, medical devices or surgery. Heart failure is a serious condition that requires ongoing medical management.
