Hardness is determined with standardized tests that apply a controlled load to a material via an indenter. The Mohs scale, which ranks minerals by scratch resistance on a qualitative 1 to 10 scale, is widely cited in geology. In industrial and engineering settings, indentation tests such as Vickers, Knoop, Brinell, and Rockwell are common. These tests produce numerical hardness values (for example HV for Vickers, HB for Brinell, HR for Rockwell) based on the response to a specified load. The hardness value generally relates to the contact area of the indentation and the applied force, though each test method has its own indenter geometry and scale.
