Hand pruners, also called pruning shears or secateurs, are a small hand tool used for cutting small branches and stems during pruning of trees, shrubs, and plants. They are designed for close, precise cuts and are a common gardening implement.

Most hand pruners have two handles and a cutting blade. The main design split is bypass pruners, with two curved blades that pass each other, suitable for live wood; and anvil pruners, where a single blade closes onto a flat anvil, often better for dead wood. Some models add ratcheting action, a locking mechanism, and ergonomic grips.

Typical cutting capacity ranges from about 6 to 25 millimeters, depending on model. In use, cut the branch just above a bud or lateral shoot, avoid tearing the wood, and make the cut at a slight angle for faster healing. For larger branches, use loppers or a saw instead; do not force a prune.

Maintenance includes cleaning sap after use, drying to prevent rust, sharpening the blade with a fine file or stone, and occasional lubrication of the pivot and spring. Replace worn parts, such as springs, pads, and blades, as needed. Store in a dry place and keep safety lock engaged when not in use.

When selecting hand pruners, consider hand size, grip comfort, cutting capacity, blade type, and whether you prefer bypass or anvil style. Professional-grade models tend to be longer lasting, while basic consumer models are cheaper. Regular maintenance extends tool life.
