Handnålar are slender metal tools used for manual sewing, embroidery, and fabric repair. They vary in length, thickness, and tip shape, but share the basic function of guiding thread through fabric by hand without a machine.

A handnål consists of a shaft, a pointed tip, and an eye through which thread is passed. The point and shaft length determine its suitability for certain fabrics, while the eye size affects thread compatibility. The balance between a smooth shaft and a well-shaped point helps prevent fabric snagging and reduces tearing.

Most handnålar are made from carbon steel or stainless steel, often coated or nickel-plated to reduce corrosion and ease threading. Some specialty needles use different materials or finishes for durability or fabric-specific performance. The finish also influences how smoothly the needle glides through the material.

Needle sizes follow a standardized system; smaller numbers indicate finer needles suitable for delicate fabrics, larger numbers for heavier materials. The size also correlates with the thread thickness intended to be used. When choosing a needle, compatibility with fabric type, thread weight, and hand comfort are important considerations.

Common types include universal needles for general woven fabrics, sharp needles for hard-wearing textiles, ballpoint needles for knits, embroidery or crewel needles for decorative work, and tapestry or darning needles for fabric mending or canvas projects. Milliner needles are long with a large eye for hatmaking and fine handwork. Care and proper storage extend needle life and help prevent rust or bending.
