Haltosis is a rare neurological condition characterized by the sudden, involuntary arrest of breathing during sleep, leading to a temporary cessation of oxygen supply to the brain. This condition is often associated with sleep apnea, a more common disorder where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. Haltosis is distinct from sleep apnea in that it involves a complete cessation of breathing, whereas sleep apnea typically involves partial or complete obstructions of the airway.

The exact cause of haltosis is not fully understood, but it is believed to be related to abnormalities in the brainstem, the part of the brain that controls breathing. Individuals with haltosis may experience symptoms such as daytime fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and morning headaches. These symptoms can be attributed to the reduced oxygen supply to the brain during episodes of haltosis.

Diagnosis of haltosis typically involves a sleep study, where the individual's breathing and heart rate are monitored during sleep. Treatment options for haltosis may include continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, which helps to keep the airway open during sleep, or surgery to correct any anatomical abnormalities that may be contributing to the condition. In some cases, lifestyle modifications such as weight loss and avoiding alcohol and sedatives before bedtime may also be recommended.
