A halosere is a type of ecological succession that occurs in a saline environment. It describes the process by which a plant community gradually changes over time, typically starting in a salt marsh or salt flat and progressing towards a less saline, or even freshwater, environment. This succession is driven by the accumulation of organic matter and the gradual leaching of salts from the soil.

The initial stage of a halosere is characterized by halophytic plants, which are salt-tolerant species adapted to high salt concentrations. These might include species like saltgrass or glasswort. As these plants grow and die, their organic material decomposes, contributing to the formation of soil and increasing its organic content. This process also helps to trap sediment, which can further build up the land and alter the hydrology.

Over time, the salt concentration in the soil begins to decrease due to factors such as increased organic matter content, changes in water flow, and the gradual leaching of salts deeper into the ground or away from the surface. This creates conditions suitable for less salt-tolerant species. As the salinity drops, glycophytes, or non-salt-tolerant plants, begin to colonize the area.

The succession continues as the environment becomes progressively less saline. Eventually, the halophytic species are replaced by a sequence of plants, potentially leading to a freshwater marsh, grassland, or even a woodland community, depending on the specific environmental conditions.
