Transitions between these states, such as melting (solid to liquid), freezing (liquid to solid), vaporization (liquid to gas), and condensation (gas to liquid), occur when the substance gains or loses energy, typically in the form of heat. Other states of matter exist, such as plasma and Bose-Einstein condensates, but solid, liquid, and gas are the most commonly encountered on Earth.
