A half-demon is a being described in folklore and fantasy as having partial demonic ancestry, typically a demon parent and a mortal parent. In many settings the term denotes someone with one demon parent and one human parent, though some worlds allow multiple generations of demonic blood or use broader labels for similar hybrids. The concept is often used to explore the tension between a foothold in human society and the pull of a more infernal nature.

Etymology and terminology vary by tradition. The older folkloric term cambion is frequently used for offspring of a demon and a human in demonology and fantasy literature, while “half-demon,” “demonkin,” or “demonblooded” appear in various games and stories. In some role-playing games, related concepts include tieflings (descendants of humans and fiends) or other demon-derived races, each with its own rules for lineage and abilities.

Traits and powers vary with setting but commonly include enhanced strength, speed, or resilience, and a capacity for magic or supernatural senses. Many depictions grant some form of vulnerability to holy rites, magical symbols, or moral temptations connected to the demon heritage. Internal conflicts—struggling to control demonic impulses or choosing between mortal and infernal loyalties—are a frequent narrative element. Appearance is diverse: some half-demons show visible signs such as unusual eyes, horns, or scaled skin, while others are indistinguishable from humans.

Portrayals range from feared outsiders to protagonists seeking redemption. In literature, film, and games, half-demons provide a vehicle for exploring identity, power, stigma, and the consequences of embracing or resisting one’s lineage.
