A hüperviisoril, commonly known as a hypervisor, is a type of virtualization software, firmware, or hardware that creates and runs virtual machines. It allows a host computer to support multiple guest virtual machines, each operating with its own operating system and applications. Essentially, a hypervisor acts as a layer between the physical hardware and the virtual machines, managing and allocating the host's resources such as CPU, memory, and storage to each guest.

There are two main types of hypervisors. Type 1 hypervisors, also known as bare-metal hypervisors, run directly on the host's hardware. Examples include VMware ESXi, Microsoft Hyper-V, and Xen. This type is often used in enterprise environments for its efficiency and performance. Type 2 hypervisors, also called hosted hypervisors, run on top of a conventional operating system, much like any other application. VMware Workstation and Oracle VirtualBox are common examples of Type 2 hypervisors, typically used for desktop virtualization and development purposes. The primary function of any hypervisor is to enable efficient resource sharing and provide isolation between virtual machines, enhancing flexibility and scalability in computing environments.
