Hørselssykdom refers to a range of conditions that affect a person's ability to hear. These disorders can vary in severity and cause, impacting one or both ears. The effects can be temporary or permanent, and they may manifest at any stage of life, from infancy to old age.

The causes of hørselssykdom are diverse. Some are congenital, meaning they are present at birth, and can be due to genetic factors or complications during pregnancy. Others are acquired later in life, often as a result of infections, such as ear infections or viral illnesses. Exposure to loud noise, both sudden and prolonged, is a significant cause of noise-induced hearing loss. Age-related hearing loss, known as presbycusis, is another common form. Certain medications, particularly ototoxic drugs, can also damage hearing. Trauma to the head or ear can lead to auditory impairment, as can certain medical conditions like Meniere's disease or acoustic neuroma.

Symptoms of hørselssykdom can include difficulty understanding speech, especially in noisy environments, ringing or buzzing in the ears (tinnitus), a feeling of fullness in the ear, or dizziness. In some cases, the hearing loss may be sudden and complete.

Diagnosis typically involves audiological testing, such as audiometry, to measure hearing ability. Medical history and a physical examination of the ear are also important components. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and type of hearing loss. For conductive hearing loss, medical or surgical interventions may be effective. Sensorineural hearing loss, which is more common, often involves management through hearing aids, cochlear implants, or other assistive listening devices. Early detection and intervention are crucial for maximizing treatment outcomes and improving quality of life for individuals affected by hørselssykdom.
