högskola

Högskola is a term used in Sweden for a public higher education institution that provides professional higher education and conducts applied research. Traditionally, högskolor offered bachelor’s and master’s programs with a focus on practical training and close ties to industry and public services, rather than broad theoretical research. The distinction from a university has historically rested on the breadth of its research activity and the right to award doctoral degrees; universities have a broader research mandate and the authority to grant doctorates, while högskolor primarily deliver undergraduate and master’s level education. Over the last decades many högskolor have expanded their program offerings and some have been upgraded to university status.
