Háttérvilágítással is the Hungarian term for backlight. It refers to a light source placed behind an object or screen to illuminate it. This technique is commonly used in various display technologies to make images visible. In liquid crystal displays (LCDs), a backlight is essential as the liquid crystals themselves do not produce light. Instead, they modulate the light from the backlight to create the image. Early LCDs used cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) for backlighting, but these have largely been replaced by light-emitting diodes (LEDs).

LED backlighting offers several advantages, including lower power consumption, thinner designs, and better color reproduction. There are different types of LED backlighting arrangements, such as edge-lit and full-array. Edge-lit systems place LEDs along the edges of the display, with light diffusers to spread the illumination across the screen. Full-array backlighting, also known as direct-lit, distributes LEDs across the entire back surface of the display. This often allows for more precise control over brightness in different areas of the screen, leading to improved contrast ratios and deeper blacks, especially in systems with local dimming capabilities.

Beyond displays, backlighting can be employed in photography and stage lighting to create visual effects or separate a subject from its background. In digital signage and electronic books, backlighting ensures readability in various ambient light conditions. The development of backlighting technologies has been a key factor in the evolution of visual media and display performance.
