Gästpartiklar, or guest particles, is a term used in physics to describe particles that are temporarily present or weakly interacting within a system, often referring to situations in quantum field theory or condensed matter physics. These particles do not fundamentally alter the nature of the underlying system but rather "visit" or interact with it for a duration.

The concept of guest particles is particularly relevant in the study of emergent phenomena. For instance, in a solid material, the collective excitations of the lattice vibrations are called phonons. If a foreign atom or impurity is introduced into this lattice, its interactions with the phonons can be considered as those of a guest particle. Similarly, in particle physics, virtual particles that mediate forces can be thought of as transient guest particles that pop in and out of existence.

The key characteristic of a guest particle is its relative independence from the host system's core properties. While it can influence the system's behavior through interactions, it doesn't become an intrinsic part of the system's fundamental description. This distinction allows physicists to analyze complex systems by separating the behavior of the host from the influence of the guest.
