Gázkioldódásos, often translated as gas eruption or gas release, refers to a geological phenomenon where dissolved gases within a body of water, typically a lake or the ocean, are rapidly released into the atmosphere. This release can be triggered by various factors, including seismic activity, sudden changes in temperature or pressure, or even the decomposition of organic matter.

The most dramatic and well-known examples of gázkioldódásos events have occurred in lakes. In these instances, large volumes of dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2) can accumulate in the deep waters. If a disturbance causes this gas-rich water to mix with the surface layers, the reduction in pressure allows the CO2 to escape as bubbles. This can lead to a sudden and massive release of gas, potentially suffocating any organisms in the vicinity and even causing tsunamis if the eruption is substantial enough. The Limnic eruption of Lake Nyos in Cameroon in 1986 is a tragic illustration of this phenomenon, where a massive CO2 release led to the deaths of over 1,700 people.

While less common and usually less catastrophic, similar processes can occur in the ocean, particularly in areas with volcanic activity or where methane hydrates are present. The release of dissolved gases from the seabed can impact marine ecosystems and, in extreme cases, contribute to changes in atmospheric gas concentrations. Understanding the conditions that lead to gázkioldódásos events is crucial for hazard assessment and the development of early warning systems in affected regions.
