Gyökérgumók, a Hungarian term, refers to the swollen underground storage organs of plants, commonly known in English as root tubers or root swellings. These structures are distinct from true tubers, which are modified stems, though they serve a similar purpose of storing nutrients. Gyökérgumók are essentially enlarged portions of the root system, often developing from adventitious roots or the main taproot.

Their primary function is to store carbohydrates, such as starch and sugars, and other essential nutrients, allowing the plant to survive unfavorable conditions like winter dormancy or drought.
