Gyógyszerfejlesztés, also known as drug development, is a complex and lengthy process that aims to bring new medicines to patients. It begins with the identification of a potential therapeutic target, often a specific molecule involved in a disease. Researchers then screen vast libraries of chemical compounds or design new ones to find "hits" that interact with the target.

These promising compounds undergo rigorous preclinical testing in laboratories and animal models to assess their safety and efficacy. If a compound shows sufficient promise and a good safety profile, it can proceed to clinical trials in humans. These trials are conducted in several phases. Phase I trials involve a small group of healthy volunteers to evaluate safety, dosage, and how the drug is metabolized. Phase II trials involve a larger group of patients with the target disease to assess efficacy and further evaluate safety. Phase III trials are large-scale, multi-center studies involving hundreds or thousands of patients to confirm efficacy, monitor side effects, and compare the new drug to existing treatments.

Upon successful completion of clinical trials, the drug developer submits a comprehensive application to regulatory authorities, such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States or the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in Europe. These agencies review all the data to determine if the drug is safe and effective for its intended use. If approved, the drug can be marketed and prescribed to patients. Post-market surveillance, known as Phase IV trials, continues to monitor the drug's long-term safety and effectiveness in the general population.
