gynodioecy
Gynodioecy is a reproductive system found in some plant species where individuals exist as either female plants or hermaphroditic plants. This system is a form of sexual polymorphism, meaning that within a single species, there are distinct sexual morphs. Female plants possess only pistillate (female) flowers, capable of producing seeds but not pollen. Hermaphroditic plants, on the other hand, have perfect flowers, containing both staminate (male) and pistillate (female) reproductive organs. These hermaphrodites can produce both pollen and ovules, allowing for self-pollination or pollination by other hermaphrodites.
The evolutionary persistence of gynodioecy is often attributed to a balance between the advantages and disadvantages
Gynodioecy is distinct from dioecy, where individuals are either purely male or purely female. In gynodioecious
